Posted: 2019-08-08

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has commended the Community Development Service (CDS) programme of the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) stressing that it is a veritable platform to create human rights awareness to the grassroots.

Executive Secretary of the Commission, Tony Ojukwu Esq stated this when he led top management officials of the Commission on a working visit to the Headquarters of the (NYSC) in Abuja. The Executive Secretary noted that the Commission intends to leverage on the CDS to offer human rights education to the corps members which they could in turn step down to the various towns and communities as part of their service to fatherland.

According to Ojukwu, engaging with the corps members will enable the Commission to guide them on how they could form Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and develop proposals that will advance the course of democracy and human rights.

He stated that partnering with the NYSC will bring into focus the human rights window of the Corp which will in turn mitigate human rights violation and impunity in the society.

Earlier, the Director General of the NYSC, Brigadier General, Shuaibu Ibrahim, thanked the Executive Secretary and his management team for the visit adding that partnering with the NHRC would go a long way in increasing human rights awareness among the corps members
