NHRC PLEDGES TO STRENGTHEN PARTNERSHIP WITH HUMAN RIGHTS AGENDA NETWORK

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has said that Human Rights Agenda Network is a dependable ally in the cause of promoting and protecting human rights in Nigeria hence the Commission's resolve to involve the network in its numerous programmes.

The Acting Executive Secretary of the Commission, Mrs. Ovrawah made this pledge in Abuja when members of the Steering Committee of Human Rights Agenda Network led by its Chairman, Mr. Chinonye Obiagu paid a working visit to the Commission.

The NHRC's boss observed that the Human Rights Agenda Network was well positioned to assist the Commission reach out to every community in Nigeria in the cause of fighting human rights violations, especially in the states where the Commission is yet to establish offices.

Mrs. Ovrawah commended the network on its effective partnership with the Commission in the current European Union sponsored accountability project on Military operations in the North Eastern part of the country.

She also promised to take steps towards activating the NHRC's fund as contained in the Commission's Amendment Act in order to ease the work of the Commission which is increasingly becoming more challenging.

Earlier in his remarks, the Chairman, Steering Committee of Human Rights Agenda Network, Mr. Obiagu stated the readiness of his network to reinforce its partnership with the Commission especially in different states of the federation where series of human rights violations occur.

He said Human Rights Agenda Network is made up of 335 non- governmental organizations working in different thematic areas of human rights in Nigeria.

Mr. Obiagu also used the opportunity to inform the Commission that his network has been working in the North East to ensure that the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) especially women and children have their fundamental rights protected.

On the issue of the human rights fund, Mr. Obiagu said when the fund is fully activated it would assist the Commission to establish Shelters that will provide temporary accommodation for women who are victims of gender based violence so as to prevent further violation of their rights.
