NHRC CONDOLES FCT POLICE OVER DEATH OF DCP UMAR

Posted: 2019-08-07

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has condoled with the Nigerian Police over the death of Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of operations in FCT, Usman Umar, saying his death is a reminder of the sacrifice police personnel make on daily basis to keep the nation safe and secure.

Executive Secretary of the Commission, Tony Ojukwu Esq stated this when he led top management staff of the Commission on a condolence visit to the Commissioner of Police FCT, Bala Ciroma.

"The death of this fine Officer during one of the protests by the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) speaks volumes of the professional hazards associated with policing which is why the Commission has always been at the fore front in advocating for improved welfare for officers and men of the Force", Ojukwu said.

Ojukwu recalled that the deceased police officer was among the senior officers who recently received the Commission's team on a working visit, adding that he has always cooperated with the Commission in resolving human rights issues involving the police while he lived.

In his response, the FCT Police Commissioner, Bala Ciroma thanked the Executive Secretary and his delegation for showing concern over the loss of one of the finest officers of the Command saying that the visit has really assured them that they are not alone in this moment of grief. CP Ciroma stated that the visit of the Executive Secretary and his team has further strengthened the bond of relationship between the Police and the Commission.

The FCT Police boss said that the Command under his watch will continue to cooperate with the Commission in the task of human rights promotion and protection in the country.
He said the FCT Police Command will continue in it's efforts to ensure that Abuja remains safe for all residents including members of the diplomatic community.
