TAKE A BOLD STEP TO FIGHT CORRUPTION AND ENSURE ENJOYMENT OF HUMAN RIGHTS NHRC URGES

Posted: 2017-03-08

Ag. Executive Secretary NHRC, Mrs. Oti Ovrawah has called on Nigerian Women to take a bold step in fighting the monster of corruption to ensure full enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms, as Nigeria joins the rest of the world to celebrate International Women's Day (IWD).

Mrs. Ovrawah who made this call on the eve of the International Women's Day celebration noted that corruption is responsible for gross human rights violation everywhere in the world and that this adversely affects women, children and the less privileged members of the society the most.

She used the opportunity of (IWD) celebration to call on everyone to shun discrimination against women and girls which is still rampant. She said equality for women is progress for all, noting that countries with higher level of gender equality have higher economic growth and better protection for rights of women. Women participation in peace and security work, and women negotiators increase chances of sustainable peace she added.

The Ag Executive Secretary of NHRC said "human rights are not a dream, they are duties for which we must all work to realize". She further calls on the government to commit to women's and the girl child's rights so that they can live free from violence in all circumstances and have equal say to decision making that affect their lives.
She said this year's theme "Be bold for change" is therefore relevant as it is reminder to every woman to rise up and take a bold step to be part of a change for better life of women.
