NHRC LAMENTS EXECUTION OF HAUWA LIMAN: PROPOSES POLICY ON PROTECTION OF CIVILIANS

Posted: 2018-10-18

The Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission, Tony Ojukwu Esq has stated that the Commission is putting in place modalities to come up with government policy on protection of civilians during conflict.

Ojukwu stated this in Maidugiri while reacting to the execution of the Aid Worker Hauwa Liman, by Boko Haram.

He said the Commission is collaborating with Federal Ministries of Justice and Defence, Civilians in Conflict and other stakeholders on the policy. According to him, the policy will also look at mitigation of harm in situations of conflict.

He further commented that stakeholders will converge in Abuja on the 29th of October to discuss the draft policy saying this is necessitated by the conflicts in the North East and other parts of the country.

"The Commission's modest contribution in this matter is to make sure that the protection of civilians is at the center of government policy in the management of conflicts in Nigeria" the Commission's Boss said.

While commiserating with the Aid Worker's family and the ICRC, Mr. Ojukwu called on well-meaning Nigerians to condemn this dastardly act and play their roles in putting a stop to any future occurrence.

He also called on the government to redouble its efforts at ensuring that Leah Sharibu and others in the captivity of boko haram are released alive.
