JAN-MAR 2026 HUMAN RIGHTS DASHBOARD

NHRC Releases First Quarter 2026 Human Rights Situation Dashboard

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has released its First Quarter 2026 Human Rights Situation Dashboard (January–March 2026), reinforcing its commitment to transparent and data-driven human rights monitoring in Nigeria.

A total of 659,617 complaints were received during the period, representing a 5% increase compared to the same period in 2025. The North-Central region recorded the highest number of complaints, followed by the North-West and North-East, reflecting ongoing challenges linked to insecurity and governance.

Further analysis shows that 10 states accounted for 79% of total complaints, indicating a concentration of human rights concerns in specific locations. Notably, child abandonment remained the most reported violation for eight consecutive months, highlighting persistent gaps in child protection systems.

Through its Human Rights Observatory, the Commission also documented 651 kidnapping incidents and 492 killings within the quarter, with activities largely attributed to banditry, insurgency, and other criminal elements. The most affected states include Kwara, Niger, Benue, Borno, Plateau, Zamfara, Kebbi, Katsina, Kogi, and Adamawa.

The Commission reiterates the need for strengthened institutional response, accountability, and coordinated action to address these trends. The Dashboard remains a critical tool for tracking human rights developments and informing policy and intervention efforts.

The NHRC will continue to provide timely updates to promote accountability and ensure the protection of human rights across Nigeria.
