The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) is deeply shocked and saddened by the horrific attack that claimed the lives of Mrs. Fatima Abubakar and her six children in Dorayi Chiranchi Quarters, Kano State, on Saturday, January 17, 2026.

There were media reports that unknown assailants broke into the victims home, brutally murdered them with dangerous weapons, and threw an infant into a well.

The Executive Secretary of the Commission, Dr. Tony Ojukwu OFR, SAN who stated this while reacting to the fatal attack observed that the barbaric act is not only a crime against humanity but also a grave violation of the fundamental right to life guaranteed under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and international human rights instruments to which Nigeria is a party.

The Commission strongly condemns this heinous crime and calls on the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant security agencies to ensure a thorough investigation and bring the perpetrators swiftly to justice. Such acts of violence must not be allowed to fester in our communities, and impunity must never be tolerated.

"We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of the victims, the people of Dorayi Chiranchi, and the entire Kano State. The NHRC stands in solidarity with them during this time of immense grief", the Executive Secretary said.

The Commission reiterates its unwavering commitment to the protection and promotion of human rights in Nigeria and as such as ready to collaborate with the law enforcement agencies to ensure that the incident is thoroughly investigated and culprits brought to book to ensure that the rights of every person living in Nigeria is protected in accordance with the law.

In conclusion, the learned Silk called for the collaboration of all stakeholders to uphold the sanctity of human life and foster a society where peace, justice, and respect for human dignity prevail.
