The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has announced the election of its Executive Secretary, Tony Ojukwu, OFR, SAN, to the Bureau of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI). The GANHRI Bureau serves as the alliance's executive committee and is composed of 16 members, with four representatives drawn from each of its regional networks in Africa, the Americas, the Asia-Pacific, and Europe.

As the governing body of GANHRI, the Bureau is responsible for implementing decisions of the General Assembly, overseeing operations and programmes, assessing membership applications, and reviewing the accreditation status of National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) worldwide.

Ojukwu's election is widely seen as a significant milestone for Nigeria and a recognition of the NHRC's growing influence and commitment to advancing human rights standards in Nigeria and at the global level.

It will be recalled that the Executive Secretary was also elected President of the Network of National Human Rights Institutions in West Africa (NNHRI-WA) on July 4, 2025.
