The Abia State Office of the National Human Rights Commission has intervened to secure the release of Grace, a 65-year-old food vendor from Ogbor Hill, Aba, who had been detained by the State Intelligence Bureau, Umuahia, over allegations connected to her missing grandson.
When NHRC officers visited her cell, she was found ill, delirious, and in urgent need of medical care. The Commission promptly persuaded the police to transfer Grace to the Police Clinic, where she received treatment for malaria, arthritis, and hypertension.
NHRC also opposed attempts to place her on remand in court, ensuring her rights were protected throughout the investigation.
Following the intervention, Grace was released, and her health and dignity restored. The case underscores the Commission's vital role in preventing unlawful detention, safeguarding vulnerable persons, and upholding due process in line with human rights standards.
